Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18 - Returning to its Southern Ocean roots

© Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 will be contested over the longest distance in race history at around 45,000 nautical miles (nm), crossing four oceans and taking in 11 major cities on five continents.

The 43-year-old race around the world – the ultimate ocean marathon, pitting the sport’s best sailors, against each other across the world’s toughest oceans – will start from Alicante in late 2017 with a 700nm sprint to Lisbon, Portugal that will provide the first test of the form guide.
From the Portuguese capital, the fleet will plunge south towards Cape Town, South Africa, before an epic few weeks racing through the Southern Ocean and then back north across the equator to Hong Kong SAR, China in what will be one of the longest legs in Race history.
After a non-scoring transition to Guangzhou, China where an in-port race and full set of stopover activities will be held, the ocean racing will resume from Hong Kong to Auckland, New Zealand. The fleet will then head back through the Southern Ocean, around the most famous landmark of them all, Cape Horn, and up through the Atlantic Ocean to the southern Brazilian city of Itajaí.

© Volvo Ocean Race

From there, as in the last edition, the boats will head back in to the northern hemisphere to the Eastern Seaboard of the USA, Newport, Rhode Island, before a blast across the North Atlantic on the blue riband transatlantic leg, which will see them make a first return to British shores in 12 years.
The fleet will arrive in Cardiff, capital city of Wales, in May 2018, before beating its way around the top of the British Isles on a short but potentially brutal leg to the penultimate stopover in Gothenburg, Sweden. The 2017-18 race will end with a grand finale into The Hague, Netherlands.

The total distance of the racetrack is longer than in any of the 12 previous editions of an event which was born as The Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973. But while the teams will sail more nautical miles than ever before, the race itself is scheduled to be one month shorter than in most of the last 12 editions.
“More action, more speed, more tough miles and more host venues, but a shorter race – it’s an evolution in the right direction and a move that takes the Race closer to its original roots and heritage, while improving its strong commercial value and excellent business case for sponsors,” said Mark Turner, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race.

© Volvo Ocean Race

Around 12,500 nm of the race will take place in the Southern Ocean, the fast-moving, ice cold waters around the Antarctic where, unhindered by land, some of the deepest weather depressions circle the bottom of the global, generating giant waves and punishing,  heavy winds that can peak at over 70 knots (130 km/h). In the previous edition, the teams spent around 4,500 nm racing in the Southern Ocean.

“In 2017-18 we’ll be visiting some of the world’s most famous sailing cities – places like Cape Town, Auckland and Newport, Rhode Island – while also taking the Race to fresh audiences in new cities,” Turner said, as the route was unveiled.

“Firstly to Hong Kong, an incredible city, which will act as a hub for south-east Asian fans and VIP guests. Then on to Guangzhou, China -  the first time the Race will visit one of just four, premium Tier 1 cities in the country.
“And finally to Cardiff, taking the Race back to the UK for the first time since 2005-06. The United Kingdom is the birthplace of The Whitbread Round the World Race, which had its first start from Portsmouth in 1973 and later became the Volvo Ocean Race in 1998.”
Looking forward, Turner added: “It’s also great to be preparing for a fourth consecutive start from our home port of Alicante, and heading back to familiar cities where we’re building a legacy for the Race – to Lisbon, Itajaí, Gothenburg and The Hague.”

In more recent editions, the boats have raced north through the Indian Ocean, towards the Middle East - and have only returned to the south and its more extreme weather for the shorter leg across to Cape Horn.

© VISITFLANDERS Photo www.milo-profi.com and Westtoer

It will show traditional gardens with its green pastures. With different topics of current public interest such as urban gardening, nature protection, mobility, requirements of a modern metropolitan area, health food and many other relevant subjects.
Gardens are places of privacy and reclusiveness. Gardens are introvert and leave space for contemplation. Gardens enable their users to enjoy their private space and offer recreation amidst our fast-living time and the hectic of the city. But gardens are also places of encounter and shared activity. More and more shared garden projects are emerging in the urban space, from neighbourhood gardens to intercultural gardens.

. Therefore, IGA Berlin 2017 already connects with all different types of partners all-around Berlin, to establish a tight network, even before 2017, when the actual exhibition is about to open up in April for 170 days of garden festivities.

Slow Food - harmony with nature

Fotograf: Anneli Jonsson, Idre Sameby.

Reindeer meat is among the best food you could eat. Reindeer meat should be lightly spiced so as not to cover its natural taste, often only salt is needed. Reindeer meat is naturally tender and it does melt in your mouth.

The suovas filet has obtained its special taste through a process of cold smoking according the to traditional sámi method, over a bonfire in the traditional sámi hut.
Before the smoking process takes act, the meat is dry salted over a period of three-four days. It is later cold smoked under an eight hours period over a traditional bonfire in the traditional tent. It is very important that the temperature is kept constant. In order to give the meat its specific and traditional taste of smoke, the sámi use wood from alder, birch or sallow. After the meat has cooled down, it is ready to be eaten either cut in thin layers as a delicate appetizer or together with lingon berry and preserved chantarelles.

Suovas always has its place in the sámi rucksacks whilst they are at work with their reindeers and is either roasted over a bonfire or fried in a frying pan, often accompanied by homemade bread as a carbohydrates support. Goike Suovas is air dried and has an even more concentrated taste. The meat dries out for a couple of weeks after being smoked so as to obtain a more compact consistence. In Sámi language it is called goike biergu (dried meat).

THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO

This is the story of a marionette who talks, walks and behaves like a child with a peculiarity: for each lie he tells, his nose becomes longer.

One day the woodcarver Geppetto, since he was feeling alone, decided to build a wooden marionette with an unusual piece of wood given to him by his friend carpenter. The wood was special because it was magically animated. Geppetto decided to name it Pinocchio and after carving his head making hairs, eyes, mouth and nose as well as hands, legs and feet he started teaching him to walk and treating him as a real child. Pinocchio soon reveals itself to be a very naughty child. After squashing the Talking Cricket for his advices, Pinocchio sells his ABC book, which Geppetto bought after by selling his coat, in order to go to the marionette theatre. Here he meets the puppeteer Fire Eater. Due to the confusion created at the theatre, he at first threats to eat him but then, moved to pity for his story, decides to give him five gold pieces for Geppetto. On his way home, Pinocchio meets a Cat and a Fox who trick and convince him that if he plants the gold pieces in a blessed field called the Field of Wonders, these will double. The Cat and the Fox rob him and even hang him to the branch of a tree. It will be the Fairy with Turquoise Hair who will come and save him.
However, Pinocchio’s misadventures continue. He will end up in prison, almost fried in a pan by a fisherman and run away to the Land of Toys with his friend Lamp-Wick, where after 5 months he becomes a donkey. Pinocchio is then bought by the owner of a Circus but after spraining his leg he is sold to a man who wants to do a drum with his skin. The man therefore tries to drown him into the sea but eaten by fishes Pinocchio changes back to a marionette and tries to swim away. While swimming he is swallowed by a Shark. Luckily, in his belly Pinocchio meets Geppetto, who, set out to look for him, was wrecked and in turn swallowed up long time before. The two manage to escape from the gaping mouth of the shark and be safe. Trained by his experience, Pinocchio finally develops sound judgement. He starts studying and working in order to help Geppetto. Behaving well, Pinocchio wakes up one morning and discovers that he became a real child.

Italy have also well-known authors such as Calvino, Pirandello and Pasolini who wrote about Christmas.

Pinocchio was set in Tuscany, places in the original tale it is not specified. There is a park in the town of Collodi (Tuscany and place from where the writer took is pen-name) that is precisely based on the book "The Adventures of Pinocchio", "Le avventure di Pinocchio: storia di un burattino" of Carlo Collodi.

A gallery of ancient life - Dinosaurium, Sweden

© Paleontological Museum, Moscow

Scutosaur - Severo-Dvinskaya gallery in New Paleontological Museum.

The Paleontological Institute is a continuation of the story of the Kunstkamera of Peter the Great which was open in Saint-Petersburg in 1714. At that time, it was just some ancient peculiarities which were collected by the Decree of Tsar. The first real exposition(as a gallery of ancient life) had been developed after famous excavations of Professor V.P.Amalitsky in Northern Russia. Dozens of vertebrate skeletons from the Permian period (end of Paleozoic) were found in the banks of the Malaya Severnaya Dvina River(in the Arkhangelsk area). The basic part of the exposition display included the skeletons of herbivorous Skutosaurus skeletons and predatory Inostrancevia skeletons. These excavations were the first evidence of the richness of ancient vertebrate fauna in Eastern Europe and marked the beginning of systematic investigations into the fauna of Permian-Triassic continental deposits of Russia(fauna of the ancient amphibians, Parareptilia and teromorph reptiles, which are the ancestors of mammals). These works are still going on, and these exhibits constitute the basis of a particular hall of the Late Paleozoic - Early Mesozoic Life(the oldest vertebrate animals) in the Paleontological Museum(Moscow).

© Paleontological Museum, Moscow

In the beginning of XX century, the Severo-Dvinskaya gallery (named after prof. Amalitsky) became the gold basis of the exhibition hall of ancient life in the Geological Museum of St-Petersburg. The museum hall was completed with a cast of the Diplodicus carnegii skeleton presented by E.Carnegy fund in 1913, at the 300-th anniversary of the Romanovs dynasty.

Later the exhibition grew witha skeleton of giant rhinoceros Indricotherium from Neogene of Kazakhstan being added. Indricotherium went on to become a symbol of the Paleontological Museum. With time, the Paleontological Museum grew up into the Paleontological Institute. Its first Director, academician A.A.Borisyak, played a huge role in this growth. After his death in 1944, the Institute and Museum were headed by Yu.A.Orlov, who continued the excavations and collecting of ancient mammals in Siberia and Kazakhstan. Numerous mammal skeletons  from the Neogene of Eurasia(rhinos, horses, bears and deers) became the main part of the display in the Museum hall devoted to the Cenozoic life(the evolutionary history of mammals). The largest hall of the Museum is devoted to Mesozoic life(Dinosaurs and their contemporaries). The main core of this hall are huge skeletons of dinosaurs(Tarbosaurus, Saurolophus and others) collected in the Gobi desert of Mongolia in 1946-1949, by an expedition under the leadership of I.A.Efremov. The Soviet-Mongolian(and later Russian-Mongolian) Paleontological expeditions resumed digging in the Gobi desert in 1969 and continue to the present day. The showcases with ancient crocodiles, pterosaurs, marine monsters and ancient birds complete the exposition. A special showcase is also devoted to dinosaur eggs and the breeding of dinosaurs.

The Paleontological Museum was always a scientific Museum, part of the Paleontological Institute and the Academy of Sciences. In 1934, for seven years before the Second World War, it moved to Moscow together with the entire Soviet Academy of Sciences where it occupied one of the old buildings on the banks of Moscow-river in the central part of the capital. A special story is the long struggle of its director, Yury Orlov, and all the leading scientists of the institute, for a new building for the exposition. This building was started in an incredible way and completed by 1980-1981. In 1981-1985 the Museum moved to this new enormous building in Teplyi Stan place in south Moscow. Now the Paleontological Institute bears the name of academician Aleksey Borisyak, and the Paleontological Museum the name of academician Yury Orlov. The Institute worked as the pleiad of the outstanding scientists-paleontologists Russia. The 1930 to1980s were a time of «Great Enthusiasm», «Big things» and the «Big Expeditions». The development of the paleo exposition was a life-long project for several generations of Russian paleontologists, - not for a fun alone, but for the light of Knowledge and Education of the people. The majority of exhibits in the halls of the Museum were collected during heavy expeditions in remote areas of the former USSR and Mongolia.

BRIGHT SCIENTIST

One of the big  personalities in the history of the Paleontological Institute is a professor I.A.Efremov, who was a geologist, paleontologist and organizer of many difficult expeditions; whilst at the same time being a popular science fiction writer. As a young man, in the period after the Civil war, Ivan Efremov dreamed to become a paleontologist and began work in a Paleontologic Institute in St. Petersburg, as a preparator, in 1925. Later, he became a specialist on fossil reptiles, beginning with theromorph reptiles. After his expeditions to Siberia, Central Asia and Mongolia, the Paleontological Museum was added to with many new enigmatic skeletons, including the huge skeletons of a Tarbosaurus and Saurolophus. The Mongolian expedition of the Academy of Sciences(1946-1949) is a special page in life of Ivan Efremov and the Institute. He was the organizer and the field leader of these expeditions. Most of the large skeletons in the exposition in the Mesozoic Hall were collected by teams in the Mongolian expedition. I.A.Efremov’s book, «the Road of the winds»(about the expeditions to the Gobi Desert), inspired  many boys and girls to aspire to become paleontologists.

Abisko nationalpark går via Kungsleden i Laponia.

Bastutraditionen lever stark i bygden.

On Easter Monday the boys and men set off on a whipping trip through the village and stop at people’s homes and whip the legs of every girl and woman who live in the house. A popular custom is also to grab the girl and throw her in a bath of cold water, known as an "Easter dousing". The whipping and dousing is performed to chase away illness and bad spirits. They may not appreciate it at the time, but it is actually good for the girl! Once all the whipping and dousing is over, the girl, strangely enough, rewards the boy with a ribbon around his whip and he moves on to the next house. For older boys, the man being offered a shot of alcohol. By the time they arrive home, they can be fairly happy!
